Best Lawn Chairs for the Tailgate

Three quality chairs. Three different styles. Multiple uses for each.

Everybody owns a lawn chair, and most people own three — a good one, a sagging one, and one in the truck they forgot about. The good one is usually good for one specific thing, and nobody tells you which thing before you buy it.

So that is how we ranked these. First, the weight capacity, because it is the number most often fudged and the one that decides whether you are buying a chair or renting it for a season. Second, how it carries, which is the difference between a chair you bring and a chair you leave in the garage. Comfort is third, and only third, because every chair here is comfortable sitting still in a showroom.

These three cover the three real situations. One rocks, one carries, and one holds up whatever you put in it.

Best overall

GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker

Best overall: GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker
Capacity250 lb
Weight11.8 lb
Framepowder-coated steel, spring-action rockers
Seat24.4 in wide
Folded5.5 in thick
Holderfits a can, a bottle, or a tumbler

The rocking is not a gimmick, and it is the one real mechanism in this whole category. Two spring shocks sit between the seat frame and the base, so the chair rocks without the legs digging into grass the way a sled-runner rocker does. On a gravel lot or a mowed field it still works.

It folds to five and a half inches thick, which is the number that matters when there are already four of these behind the seat. The catch is the 250-pound capacity — the lowest of the three, and the thing to check before you order.

Best for the sideline

Picnic Time Sports Chair

Best for the sideline: Picnic Time Sports Chair
Capacity300 lb
Framealuminum
Seat19.5 in wide, padded, with padded armrests
Tablefolds out from the armrest
Caddyinsulated drink pockets plus storage
Carrydetachable shoulder strap, umbrella loop

This is the one for when the parking spot and the seat are two hundred yards apart. The shoulder strap is why. You walk in with a cooler in one hand and a kid in the other, and the chair rides on your back instead of banging your knee.

The fold-out table holds a plate, which matters more at a ball field than at a tailgate where there is already a truck gate to set things on. Narrowest seat here at 19.5 inches, and the aluminum frame is the lightest, which is the trade you make for carrying it.

Best for sitting all day

EVER ADVANCED Oversized

Best for sitting all day: EVER ADVANCED Oversized
Capacity500 lb
Weight12.3 lb
Frameheavy-duty steel
Seat24.3 in wide, padded, taller back
Holderswivel cup holder, mesh side pocket
Carrybag included

Twice the capacity of the rocker and the widest seat of the three, with a back tall enough to actually put your head against. This is the chair for the eight-hour day — a long tailgate, a tournament Saturday, a fire that burns down slow.

It is a lot of chair. Heavier steel and more of it, and by most accounts it does not want to go back in the bag it came with. That is fine if it lives in the truck bed and goes twenty feet. It is less fine if you are walking.

Skip them all if

You want one chair for everything. The lot, the sideline, and the fire are three different problems, and a chair that splits the difference does all three about half as well.
