A wired thermometer runs a cable out the lid, pinches it under the gasket, and is never where you need it. A MEATER probe goes in the meat, the lid shuts, and that is the end of the setup.
Two sensors in one probe
The tip reads the inside of the meat. The back end reads the air around it. One probe tells you both the brisket temperature and the pit temperature, so you know whether the fire is drifting before the meat tells you.
Four probes, four things
Pork butt, two chickens, and a tri-tip all on the same smoker, each with its own alarm. The Block screen shows all four, and it works standalone if your phone is dead.
Why the Block, not the single
The single MEATER is Bluetooth only, about 30 feet through a grill lid. The Block picks up the probes and repeats them over Wi-Fi, so your phone works from the couch, the shop, or the ballpark. That is the difference between a thermometer and a smoker you can walk away from.
The verdict
We own this one, and it runs every long cook in our backyard. If you smoke more than one thing at a time, this is the one.
Skip it if
You only cook one thing at a time. Buy the single MEATER and save the money.
