XPOWER FC-420 18" Air Circulator

A box fan stirs the air in front of it. This one throws a column you can feel at the far wall, and six years in it still gets dragged everywhere.

A box fan churns up the air within a few feet of itself and calls it a day. This is a different machine doing a different job, and after six years ours is still the one that gets carried out to whatever needs air moved.

It throws a column, not a breeze

The shroud around the blade keeps the air together instead of letting it spread out and die. That is the difference between a fan that cools whoever is standing right in front of it and one you can feel across a two-car garage. "Focused and extended airflow" is the kind of phrase that usually means nothing on a box. Here it is the entire reason the thing works.

What it actually gets used for

Drying carpet after a shampoo, walkable in a few hours instead of damp all day. Clearing the shop out. Pointed at a dugout in June. Moving air through a campsite. And once in a while it ends up in the bedroom at bedtime, which is not what XPOWER had in mind and is not an accident either.

Speed 5 is for the carpet. Everything else lives on 2 or 3 — wide open is more air than a dugout or a tent needs.

Under three amps

2.8 A at 115 volts is low enough to run off a modest generator at a campsite, or to put two or three on one shop circuit without doing math first. The three-hour timer means a carpet job does not end with coming back out at midnight to unplug it, and when you want it running longer than that, there is an "on" setting that ignores the timer entirely.

The verdict

Six years of being hauled to a different job every month, and the only thing it has cost is the outlet. Buy it once.

Skip it if

You want a quiet, good-looking fan for the living room. This is a piece of shop equipment in a bright blue housing, and it is not pretending otherwise.
